Time Scales in Starbursts

چکیده

Starbursts are associated with distinct time scales spanning at least three orders of magnitude from 10 to 10 yr. The triggering of nuclear starbursts occurs over 10 to 10 yr, when gas is flowing to the galaxy center due to angular momentum loss, thereby raising the nuclear gas density. Star formation then increases as a result of the increased gas pressure. In addition, spontaneous star formation can occur in nuclear and off-nuclear regions if gas clouds are compressed by strong shocks. The star formation time scales in individual starburst regions are short: typically 10 to 10 yr. The subsequent evolution of a newly formed starburst is determined both by dynamical effects and by the influence of the massive stars on the surrounding interstellar medium over an evolutionary time scale (about 10 yr). Eventually starbursts fade since the ambient interstellar gas is removed from the birth sites due to winds and supernova explosion over times scales of order 10 to 10 yr.

Merger-induced Starbursts

Extragalactic starbursts induced by gravitational interactions can now be studied from z ≈ 0 to ∼ >2. The evidence that mergers of gas-rich galaxies tend to trigger galaxy-wide starbursts is strong, both statistically and in individual cases of major disk–disk mergers. Star formation rates appear enhanced by factors of a few to ∼10 above normal. Detailed studies of nearby mergers and ULIRGs sug...

The Environmental Dependence of Star Formation in the Nearby Universe

We have investigated how the incidence of star-forming galaxies varies with the environment using a volume-limited sample of nearby galaxy spectra extracted from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. The environment is characterized by the local number density of galaxies, corrected for sample incompleteness and border effects. Using the equivalent widths of [O II]λ3727 and Hδ we discriminate the sta...

Limits on the molecular gas content of z ∼ 5 LBGs

We present limits on the molecular gas content of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z ∼ 5 from observations targeting redshifted CO(1–0) and CO(2–1) line emission. We observed a single field containing eight spectroscopically confirmed z ∼ 5 LBGs, seven of which are contained within a narrow (z = 4.95±0.08) redshift range and the eighth is at z = 5.2. No source was individually detected. Assuming ...

Massive molecular outflows and evidence for AGN feedback from CO observations⋆⋆⋆

We study the properties of massive, galactic-scale outflows of molecular gas and investigate their impact on galaxy evolution. We present new IRAM PdBI CO(1-0) observations of local ULIRGs and QSO hosts: clear signature of massive and energetic molecular outflows, extending on kpc scales, is found in the CO(1-0) kinematics of four out of seven sources, with measured outflow rates of several 100...

Eddington limited starbursts in the central 10 pc of AGN , and the Torus in NGC 1068

We present results from a survey of nearby AGN using the near infrared adaptive optics integral field spectrograph SINFONI. These data enable us to probe the distribution and kinematics of the gas and stars at spatial resolutions as small as 0.085 ′′. We find strong evidence for recent but short lived starbursts residing in very dense nuclear disks; on scales of less than 10 pc these would have...
